Animal Care
Providing optimal care for our animals is of the utmost importance to Canadian seafood farmers.
This means taking steps to prevent disease through: providing a healthy rearing environment that meets all the life needs of the fish and reduces susceptibility to pathogens and pests; the use of vaccines where available to prevent disease; quickly and effectively treating diseases that do sometimes occur.
Treatment products must be authorized for sale by Health Canada and prescribed by a licensed veterinarian. Farmers work to minimize therapeutant use; it is estimated that fewer than 5 per cent of farmed fish are treated with antibiotics.
