CAIA wrote a letter, representing all our members – finfish, shellfish and plants – on March 26 to the Minister of Fisheries & Oceans. We joined all food producer groups in asking for support during this very difficult time. Our workers provide an essential service caring for animals and providing a local, fresh, nutritious protein to Canadians.
Right now, the health of our workers is at stake, and their health comes first. Our next priority is the health of our animals. We thought it the responsible position to point out to the government the potential need, only in an extreme situation where staff were reduced due to sickness, for pragmatic approaches to regulatory enforcement. We will continue to do all we can to be in full compliance with our regulatory obligations.
Our low-carbon product has amongst the highest level of international sustainability certification in the world. We will continue to strive to be the best and most sustainable producers in the world.
